STEM PROJECT

STEM Project Winners and Munster Finalists – Busy and successful start to 2016 for Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís.

Tá mí Eanair díreach thart agus ta tús iontach déanta ag daltaí na Gaelscoile don mbliain 2016. Cuirtear béim ar bhia slaintiúil agus ar shaol slaintiúil sa scoil ina h-iomlaine gach Eanair. Bíonn ranganna ag glacadh páirt sa rince Operation Transformation , ranganna eile ag déanamh cleachtaí coirp sa chlós maidineacha agus bhí alán traenáil eithpheile ar siúl le linn am loin agus I ndiaidh am scoile.
January has just elapsed and the pupils in Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís have got off to a flyer. The annual emphasis on healthy eating and an active lifestyle during the month saw classes perform the Operation Transformation dance workout, early morning runs in the school yard and lunchtime and afterschool spikeball training. The culmination of all this activity was reached last Wednesday when three teams from Rg 5 agus 6 travelled to Cork Institute of Technology to participate in the Cork Schools Spikeball competition.
Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís pupils have the distinction of winning this tournament each year over the past three years and have represented Cork at the Munster and All-Ireland stages. The current players were in no doubt that a huge effort would be required in preparation and many days of practice after school were organised, under the guiding watch of múinteoir Conchubhair. “Déanann cleachtadh máistreacht” is how the old irish proverb goes and the truth of this saying was borne out , when all three teams reached the knockout stages. With the top two teams to qualify, Gaelscoil players displayed their skill set to secure one of these places, with Glenville also qualifying to progress to the Munster Final. So our remarkable tradition in this sport continues in 2016 and we wish all the players well as they prepare now to take on the rest of Munster in the coming months.

Ní fada I ndiaidh na h-éachtanna san eitpheil, a tháinig bua eile do chuid mhaith dos na daltaí seo arís. Thugadar aghaidh ar CIT I gCorcaigh le haghaidh an Comórtas Róbó VEX 2016.
Comórtas é seo ar nós Eolaí Óg BT, ach go bhfuil gá le róbó a dhearadh agus a thógáil, maraon le tionscnamh STEM ( Eolaíocht/Teicneolaíocht/ Innealltóireacht/ Matamaitic)a léiriú chomh maith. Chuir daltaí Rg 5 agus múinteoir Maire tús leis an obair seo I lár Dheireadh Fómhair. Ag obair I ngrúpaí, léirigh na daltaí raon leathan scileanna san innealtóireacht, cláir ríomhairí a scríobh, réiteach fadhbanna agus san eolaíocht í féinig.
Further success followed quickly for some of these pupils, when they travelled again to CIT to participate in the VEX Robotics Primary schools competition for 2016. Akin to the Young Scientist Competition, but with the added task of designing and building a working robot as well as researching and presenting a STEM project to a panel of judges, Rang 5 and muinteoir Máire began their preparations in mid- October. Working in small groups, the pupils demonstrated an array of skills that incorporated engineering, computer programming, problem solving and science.
The pupils designed two prototype robots and wrote the computer programme that allowed the robots work autonomously. Once built, the class began to refine the robots’ design and many hours of problem solving finally resulted in the unveiling of Robbie Robó last week in CIT. Competing against other chosen schools for this cutting edge technological project, the pupils from Rang 5 set about their tasks with determination and no little knowledge.
First up was the presentation of the STEM project to professional scientists and other schools present on the day. In a very informative, educational presentation, Miriam O Callaghan an Treasa Mannion , aka. Éabha and Eimear, interviewed Mrs Brown and her grandchildren about her shopping habits and the sugar content in our weekly groceries, drinks and sweets. This topic was chosen by the class as it sat very comfortably with the whole school emphasis on healthy eating during the month of January.
It was then the turn of our robotics team to display their skills, firstly driving the robot with the use of a controller and subsequently in autonomous mode. By this time the excitement in CIT was palpable, as classes from all 34 schools cheered on their robots. Robbie Robó performed excellently and was always competing for the top positions in all tasks set by the competition organisers.
Friday was the ultimate day for those competing and our STEM research team were again questioned on the content of their project – The Quantity of Sugar present in daily cereals and groceries. Having expertly answered all the scientific questions posed and having outlined how the class worked scientifically throughout the project, the final task was to work collaboratively with another school in completing a set of instructions using both schools’ robots. Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís was paired with Scoil Bhríde achieving 2nd place in this section when all scores were collated by computer .
Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís and Rang 5 pupils ,in particular, were honoured to receive the overall award for their STEM Project, while also finishing in fourth place on the robot design and programming. It was a fantastic experience for the pupils and one that was truly educational as the entire class were involved in an engaging, exciting and enjoyable project that will we hope inspire our young scientists and engineers of the future. To one and all involved in the project, déanaimid comghairdeas agus táimid cinnte go bhfuil daltaí na Gaelscoile ag tnúth le páirt a ghlacadh arís sa chomórtas seo an bhliain seo chugainn.

Upcoming schools events include : Handwriting display , Bronnadh Brat na hÉireann ar dhaltaí na Gaelscoile, Aifreann na Geallúna, Iomáint faoi dhíon, peil le Aodhán Ó Bóilstéir, Cór Fhéile na Scol agus Tráth na gCeist Bhoird eagraithe ag Coiste na dTuismitheoirí.
The school extension is also due to commence shortly and our pupils are eagerly awaiting the addition of these state of the art classrooms and playground to enhance our existing facilities. The school Open Day / Lá Oscailte will be held on Thursaday, April 7th and all information and further updates on this and other upcoming events are available from the school 022-42709.

Peannaireacht / Handwriting

Good handwriting is a skill that is admired by all of us. Like other skills ,it must be practiced regularly and the younger one starts the better the result. It is also important to remember that the skill of handwriting must be practiced by all children, regardless of age.  The three main things to remember are Posture, Pencil Grip and Position.

All parents ( Naíonáin –Rang 6) are asked to do the following during the month of February

  1. Ensure your child has the correct grip when writing or colouring.
  2. Speak to your child about correct posture and positioning of the book when writing or colouring.
  3. Look at your child’s handwriting workbook and discuss with your child how each letter should be formed. Forming the letters in the correct way now will benefit your child in later years with a fluent handwriting style. Your child’s workbook will indicate the correct formation for each letter and where they should start the letter.
  4. Persist with your efforts, as it can take time for children to adjust.
  5. If your child’s pencil grip in incorrect, please ask us about the most appropriate aid to help. There are many different types of pencil and/or pencil grip available to buy at minimal cost. Your child’s teacher will advise you on the best option available for your own child.

Go raibh maith agaibh.

Eanair 2016

Athbhliain faoi shéan is faoi mhaise dhaoibh.
Tá an bhliain stairiúil 2016 buailte linn ach is mian liom comhghairdeas a dhéanamh le daltaí na scoile as na ceolchoirmeacha álainn a chuireadar i láthair do thuismitheoirí agus cairde na scoile ón 16-18ú Nollaig. Bhí halla na scoile lán go doras gach aon oíche agus ba léir gur bhain idir óg is aosta ard-thaitneamh as na ceolchoirmeacha

While wishing you all a Happy New Year at the beginning of this historic year of 2016, I also wish to congratulate the pupils for the wonderful Christmas concerts they produced from 16-18th December. The pupils performed to a packed hall and all those present enjoyed three days of fantastic entertainment – aisteoireacht, amhránaíocht, ceol , rince agus gleacaíocht fiú! The concerts are available to download from the internet. Tuilleadh eolais ón oifig agus ár mbuíochas le Gerard Brennan. Buíochas leis na múinteoirí is na cúntóirí agus baill foirne uile na scoile as a gcuid oibre ag ullmhú na gceolchoirmeacha. Gabhaim buíochas le Coiste na dTuismitheoirí freisin a chabhraigh go mór linn.

Coiste na dTuismitheoirí have also produced a lovely school calendar for 2016, featuring fun shots of all the classes. At a cost of €8, it is an ideal for friends or family. Arís, tá gach eolas ar fáil ó Regina san oifig.

Tá fócas na míosa seo dírithe ar shaol sláintiúil agus ar OSPS. Molaimid do ghach dalta (agus a muintir) leanúint oraibh leis an dea-iarracht atá á dhéanamh maidir le lón sláintiúil a ithe gach lá scoile. Is léir go raibh tionchar mór ag an bhfeachtas Food Dudes a bhí ar siúl sa scoil sa chéad téarma. Anois , ag tús na hAthbhliana , leanaimís ar fad ar aghaidh lenár n-iarrachtaí. Moltar chomh maith a bheith gníomhach agus dul amach ag siúl, ag rith, ag rothaíocht, ag snámh nó ag imirt aon saghas spóirt.

The focus in school for the month of January is on fostering healthy life habits and on SPHE (Social Personal & Health Education). The food Dudes campaign had a very positive influence in the school in the first term and we encourage all pupils ( and their families) to continue with your efforts in eating healthily in school. At the start of the new year, let us all strengthen our resolve to live more healthy and more active lives for 2016. We encourage all pupils to get out walking, running, cycling, swimming or playing any sport during the year. Check out www, mallow.ie for details of the many clubs and organisations in our town.

February will see the annual focus on the skill of handwriting , with a handwriting display in the school halla at the end of the month.
Ina theannta sin, beidh brat na hEireann á bhronnadh ar an nGaelscoil mar chuid de Chomóradh Náisiúnta 1916. Cuirfear tuilleadh eolais faoin mbronnadh chuig tuismitheoirí níos déanaí.

Tá céim nua á thógaint ag daltaí Rang 5 agus múinteoir Máire i mbliana nuair a ghlacfaidh siad páirt i gcomórtas VEX Robotics 2016. Ó thús mí Dheireadh Fómhair, tá daltaí rang 5 ag tógáil róbo agus ag deireadh mí Eanair, táid chun bualadh le scoileanna eile a bhfuil an obair céanna ar bun acu. Go n-eirí libh Rg 5 agus buíochas le muinteoirí Máire agus Angela.
A first step into the world of Robotics for the Gaelscoil happens this year also. Since early October, pupils from Rang 5 and múinteoir Máire have been busy designing and building a working robot. The initiative involves the complete design, build and programming of the robot and the results to date have been fantastic. Fantastic also has been the engagement of the pupils and who knows but some of the children may well end up in Silicone Valley or some other high tech hub in the world in years to come. Then again, why not right here in Mallow, designing and building robots and gadgets that could make all our lives easier. Dare to dream!

Sin uile go fóill ach coiméadaigí súl ar ár suíomh agus ar chomhfhreagras eile chun scéalta eile na scoile a chloisint.

Athbhliain faoi shéan is faoi mhaise dhaoibh go léir.

Meán Fómhair/Deireadh Fómhair 2015

Seo a leanas cúpla scéal gur mhian linn a roinnt libh faoi imeachtaí scoile.  Gan amhras tá obair na bliana faoi lán tseoil anois, ach taobh le sin ta roinnt imeachtaí eile ar bun.

With the schoolwork for the year well underway at this stage, we wish to share with you other events and developments that are up and running in the school at present.

  • Cead na roinne tús a chur le seomraí breise. Today we received confirmation from the Department of Education & Skills that additional funding has been sanctioned to allow our extension to proceed to construction. This additional funding relates to an increase in the scope of work.  The overall plan has resulted in a much better solution for Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís and now it is envisaged that the extension will be completed by summer 2016.
  • Bhí cruinniú cinnbhliana ag Coiste na dTuismitheoirí. Ar son gach éinne gabhaim buíochas le Bríd agus a coiste don obair a rinne said agus déanaimid comhghairdeas le Niamh agus an coiste nua de 2015/16. Gach ráth ar an obair.

Coiste na dTuismitheoirí held their AGM recently, on behalf of everyone we thank Bríd , outgoing chair and her committee for their hard work and wish Niamh and the new committee well for 2015/16.  Please support our Parents Association in any way you can, as they support us all and all of our children. Go raibh maith agaibh.

  • Tá deireadh ag teacht leis an mBord Bainistíochta reatha, agus i gceann tamaill seolfar eolas chugat faoi thogachán ionadaithe nua don chéad bord eile.

The term of office for our current Board of Management is coming to an end and shortly you will receive notification regarding election of parents for the incoming board. I wish to thank the outgoing board for their work and in particular for their lengthy deliberations on the school expansion programme.  The valuable work of the board and its effectiveness were noted by the inspectors in our Whole School Evaluation. In particular we acknowledge the work of the two parents, Tina O Keeffe and Kevin Barry who served on the board for the past four years.

  • Gach mí cuirtear béim ar leith ar ghné áirithe de shaol na scoile. Sa tslí seo bionn gach rang dírithe ar an ngné céanna.

September’s focus was on ‘Béasaí agus Beannú’ when children were encouraged to develop their mannerly behaviour and to acknowdedge each other, staff, parents and visitors by verbally greeting them. The focus for this month is Matamaitic/Maths. Each class are focussing on their maths programme and children are encouraged to see maths in the world around them. Patterns made from cups and saucers, distances to other locations, scores in rugby, soccer or football matches, tv guides are all examples of mathematics in our environment. Fun maths games can be played at home, while travelling in the car, while walking to school or running in the garden.  The focus for November will shift to Science, to coincide with Science Week. Classes will also do a science workshop during the month.  Iarrtar ar thuismitheoirí labhairt  le na páistí faoi na imeachtaí seo, chun suim a spreagadh iontu.

  • Beidh an Ghaelscoil ag glacadh páirt sa scéim ‘Food Dudes’ agus beidh deis ag do leanbh torthaí is glasraí blasta a ithe ag am lóin.

The ‘Food Dudes’ initiative is a fun and easy way to introduce children to various fruits and vegetables, to promote healthy eating habits in children. Of course, a habit will not begin or continue if not nurtured at the early stages.  Please support this initiative by continuing to promote and provide a healthy lunch for your child each day.  Buíochas leis na muinteoirí go léir agus le Eimear atá á comhordú sa scoil.

  • VEX Robotics – Tá rang 5 ag glacadh páirt sa tionscnamh seo don chéad uair riamh. As children, we all dreamed of making a robot to do all sorts of things.Well, the pupils of Rang 5 are living that dream this year and are developing and building a robot, as part of the VEX Robotics Challenge 2016.  Tuilleadh eolais níos déanaí.
  • Imechtaí scoile eile atá faoi lán tseoil anois ná Cór na Scoile agus Ceolfhoireann na scoile le daltaí ó ranganna 3-6 gach Céadaoin. Se spóirt , bhí cúpla cluiche ag foireann na mbuachaillí agus tá áit bainte amach acu i gCluiche Cheannais Thuairsceart Chorcaí ar an 20ú Deireadh Fómhair. Go n-éirí libh a bhuachaillí sa chluiche cheannais. Beidh comórtaisí eile ag cailíní agus buachaillí na Gaelscoile go luath.  Tá leabharlann na scoile oscailte gach Aoine ag am lóin agus is iontach go bhfuil an méid sin suime ag páistí sna leabhair léitheoireachta.

Feabhra 2015

A chairde,

Seo thíos píosa eolais I dtaobh imeachtaí a thit amach sa scoil le déanaí. Mar aon leis na h-imeachtaí seo, bhí roinnt rudaí eile ar siúl ag ranganna faoi leith agus ag Coiste na dTuismitheoirí gan amhras. Déanaim tagairt go speisialta do Thráth na gCeist Bhoird, eagraithe ag Coiste na dTuismitheoirí, ag an ngrúpa ceoil a ghlac páirt I Scór agus na daltaí a ghlac páirt sna comórtaisí Tráth na gCeist le déanaí. Molaim go mór an obair atá ar siúl.

Success for Gaelscoil Spikeballers

Children from Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís have maintained their impressive record in the Cork Spikeball Championships, having performed impressively again this year. Spikeball is a version of volleyball that is rapidly gaining popularity among children and teenagers around Ireland. Gaelscoil Thomáis Daibhís  provided three of the ten teams entered in the mixed category. All three gaelscoil teams emerged from the group-stage of the competition, looking very promising throughout.

One of the teams bowed out, having topped their group, after a hard-fought quarter final. The two remaining teams ensured victory for the school, by providing an all Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís final.

Bhain gach éinne ana-thaitneamh as an lá. Tá an ghaelscoil ana-bhuíoch as an gcabhair a thug Evan Ó Conchubhair dos na páistí ar an lá, is as an obair iontach a bhíonn ar siúl ag na daoine eile athá ar thaithí oibre sa scoil i mbliana. Tá ard mholadh ag múinteoirí na scoile dos na páistí a bhí i láthair chomh maith, de bharr a mbéasaí is a ndea-iompar. Molaimid go hard iad.

Béim ar Pheannaireacht – Focus on Handwriting for February

Le linn mí Feabhra, chuir daltaí agus múinteoirí béim faoi leith arscil na peannaireachta. Seo scil atá agus a bhí riamh aitheanta mar scil luachmhar usáideach ag foghlaimeoirí thar na blianta. Fiú le teacht na ríomhairí agus na teicneolaíochta, is scil é an pheannaireacht a mheallfaidh moladh in áit ar bith.

Chuige san, tá tréan iarracht déanta ag daltaí na Gaelscoile sa pheannaireacht le mí anuas, agus tá saothar a gcuid oibre le feiceáil sa Thaispeántas Peannaireachta I halla na scoile anois. Fáilte roimh thuismitheoirí agus sean-thuismitheoirí teacht ar cuairt chuig an Taispeántas am ar bith.

Every year the pupils and teachers of the Gaelscoil place special emphasis on the art of handwriting. This skill is a time honoured attribute that students of learning have mastered over the centuries. Even with the progress of technology and the wizardry of the keyboard, the skilful hand-writer will  always receive great plaudits for the mastery of this skill.

Therefore, over the last number of weeks, the pupils have put extra effort into their handwriting and the fruits of their work are now on display in the school hall, where parents are welcome to come and appreciate the fantastic handwriting of all the pupils from naíonáin to rang 6.

Aonach Leabhair – School Book Fair

Beidh an Aonach Leabhair ar siúl I halla na scoile an tseachtain seo. Féach thíos I gcomhair na h-amanta. Is deis iontach é seo chun an léitheoireacht a spreagadh agus tá fáilte roimh chách. Buíochas mór le múinteoir Máire agus na cúntóirí a eagraíonn an tAonach gach tarna bliain.

The bi-annual School Book Fair takes place this week in the school hall. Surrounded by shelves  and shelves of books is a magical experience for children, and the “power of a leabhar” cannot be overstated. Please remember, there is no obligation on parents to purchase books but please come along to browse and use the Book Fair to instill a love of reading in your child. Mallow library is also a fabulous facility that we would encourage all pupils and parents to avail of. The staff will be more than happy to help your child choose a suitable book to get them started. So for some inspiration, adventure and magic, why not come along to the Aonach Leabhair with your child.

Amanta Oscailte:

Céadaoin – Aoine  1.45 go 2.30 gach lá.

Féinmheastóireacht Scoile – School Self-EvaluationTá foireann na scoile tosaithe ar an obair seo do bhliain a dó. Tógálfaimid ar an obair a deineadh sa chéad bhliain sa Mhatamaitic agus leagfar amach céimeanna chun Labhairt na Gaeilge agus scríbhneoireacht sa ghaeilge a chur chun cinn inár scoil. Beidh ról ag gach éinne chun an Plean Feabhsúcháin Scoile a chur I bhfeidhm – daltaí, tuismitheoirí agus foireann na scoile. Beidh tuilleadh eolais faoi seo á scaipeadh ar thuismitheoirí idir é seo agus an samhradh.

Seachtain Lóin Slaintiúil (Healthy Lunch Week)

Gach Eanair, cuirimid béim ar bhia folláin agus ar lón sláintiúil. Arís, i mbliana, táimid ag cur in iúl do dhaltaí agus do thuismitheoirí an tábhacht a bhaineann le bia folláin a bheith sa bhosca lóin. Ón Luan seo chugainn, déanfaidh daltaí Rg 6 líon torthaí is glasraí sna boscaí lóin a chomhaireamh agus a léiriú i bhfoirm ghraif. Beidh duais deas don rang is fearr agus ta suil againn go leanfaidh an nós den chuid eile den scoilbhliain ansin.

Every January, the school focuses on the importance of eating a healthy lunch. This year, we again remind pupils and parents of the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle. Commencing next Monday, the pupils from Rg 6 will count the number of fruit and vegetables pupils in all classes bring as part of their lunch. The results will be analysed by all classes and graphed by rang 6. A special treat (not from the top shelf of the Food Pyrimid of course) will be given to the best overall class.

So Parents don’t forget when you are out shopping this weekend, to include the healthy lunch options for your child’s lunchbox next week, and thereafter , keep it up and watch your child’s concentration improve, your child’s health improve, their levels of activity improve and their appetite at mealtimes improve. That’s a whole lot of improvements! Bígí linn.

Meastóireacht Scoile Uile(Whole School Evaluation)

Mar is eol daoibh, deineadh Meastóireacht Scoile Uile sa Ghaelscoil an tseachtain seo caite. Is mian liom buiochas a ghabháil le cigirí na Roinne as an slí a chaith siad linn agus le daltaí na scoile le linn na meastóireachta. Gabhaim buíochas le foireann iomlan na scoile agus le Coiste na dTuismitheoirí agus tuismitheoirí a chuir ceistneoirí ar ais chuig na cigirí agus leis an mBord Bainistíochta a bhí pairteach sa mheastóireacht freisin. Buíochas mór le páistí na scoile as bheith chomh maith ag léiriú buanna ár scoile i gconaí.
